ABSTRACT

This chapter illustrates and discusses the various forms of teaming and departmentalization typically found in elementary schools. A decade or two ago, there was very little departmentalization in the elementary grades; most teachers were expected to teach all subjects, regardless of their teaching strengths, weaknesses, or interests. It was not unusual for elementary teachers to spend more time on subjects they liked than on those with which they felt less comfortable. The self-contained classroom was accepted as the norm; in fact, some would argue, that was the way elementary schools were supposed to be organized!
