ABSTRACT

At the end of a busy Spring week, Ms. Ramon and her assistant Ms. Pace sat down to debrief the series of lessons on fish conducted that week in their preschool classroom. The lessons had begun the first day by having Sofie, the program cook and a tribal member, show a salmon to the children. As she prepared it for lunch, Sofie talked about the important role salmon play in the lives of the S’Klallam tribe. She told of how the salmon return each Fall, and the gratitude of the people to the salmon for giving themselves to be caught to strengthen the people. The children observed as she skillfully prepared the fish, asking questions about where the salmon lived, and how it had managed to be caught.
