All coaches, including Coach Fox, understand that the world of amateur school sports is undergoing many changes. All coaches understand that the financial cost to participate is greater now than ever before and that the competition levels have increased since our playing days. All coaches see longer seasons and athletes with greater skill sets than in the past. Yet what ineffective coaches fail to do is see how these changes affect the expectations of their athletes and their parents. Effective coaches understand not only their role in the athletic triangle but the role of parents as well. The athletic triangle is composed of athletes, parents, and coaches. The athletic triangle stands
with parents and coaches at its base supporting the hopes and dreams of the athlete. Parents have a role to play in their sons’ or daughters’ athletic experience. While Coach Fox is worrying about what every parent is thinking, the effective coaches already know. Every parent has high expectations for their athletic child.
