Effort Coach Wooden (2005) called it “industriousness” and it is a cornerstone of the Pyramid of Success. Most coaches refer to it as “effort.” Effort is old-fashioned hard work. While many coaches equate movement to work, effective coaches understand there is a difference. Effort is more than just showing up-it is the engaging of our physical and mental energy to produce. It requires exertion. It’s getting up early and staying late. It is found in planning, preparation, practice, and performance. Although we see a sporting culture always looking for shortcuts to success, effective coaches realize that there are no shortcuts. Winning on a consistent basis can be found only in hard, productive work.
