The Coach’s Legacy
Succession is another building block of a legacy. In earlier chapters, we describe modeling as a basic tenant of coaching. However, the truly great coaches can step away from modeling the appropriate skill and tactics and allow their athletes to own that skill. That is succession. I would expect that many of you reading this book can think of a coach who had a profound impact on youthe type of coach that you would do anything for. As Rob Haworth, the high school track athlete, I was privileged to have two such coaches: Coach Darrell Newkirk and Coach Roy Kline. It has been over 25 years since I stepped out on a track under their leadership, but many of the things we experienced together are very much a part of who I am as an educator. That is succession.
