ABSTRACT

The animated fi lm The Point (1971) is a fable about a round-headed child, Oblio, who stands out because everyone else has a cone-shaped head. In order to fi t in, he wears a pointed hat. However, because Oblio is different, he is ultimately banished from his village. Upon his return, he grows a point, but everyone else loses theirs and becomes rounded. The point of the story (this kind of play in words is a central part of the fi lm’s narration) is that societies change, what is perceived as good or bad is subjectively rather than objectively determined, and that individuals shouldn’t be devalued or discriminated against based upon how they look or because they are different from others.
