ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses two sets of examples. The first set illustrates the tendency to abuse the concept of prototype, the 'prototypes save' attitude; the second set of examples illustrates the usefulness of this concept when it is used as a specific analytical tool and not as a universal thought-saving device. The chapter deals with the assertion that the expression of pleasure 'is completely absent from many formal acts of congratulating'. It suggests that the following components are essential to the concept of 'game': human action, duration, aim: pleasure, 'suspension of reality', well-defined goals, well-defined rules, and the course of events. Theoretical semantics has flourished in an empirical vacuum, and lexicographers have grappled with their 'practical' tasks without theoretical framework.
