ABSTRACT
To express a thought, it often does not matter whether a tensed verb is used or its nominalisation. For instance, (1) and (2) have the same interpre tation:
(1) The explosion of the bomb preceded the execution of the prisoners. (2) The bomb exploded before the prisoners were executed.
