ABSTRACT
Democratic extremism is not an oxymoron or a contradiction in terms – that is the first conclusion of this book. The term ‘extremism’ has many meanings – though not as many as ‘democracy’ – and often has negative connotations. A coherent and objective definition has been proposed by Uwe Backes, which has been used (in a slightly amended form) in this book.
