ABSTRACT

There is interest in how family-based small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can grow and provide a sustainable future for their owners and staff. This chapter considers how a family-based business in West Yorkshire sought to make entrepreneurial learning (EL) generative by providing more recognition and action for product development and innovation (PDI) through the formation of a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) with the University of Leeds, leading to the appointment of a highly qualified chemical engineer. Given that informality is a well-recognised feature of family business life, the programme could be seen as disturbance to the business. The chapter considers the struggle for PDI based on the sociology of translation and actor network theory (ANT).
