ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of interactive music systems and the ways in which they can be used to enhance music instruction. It focuses on interactive systems and makes little further reference to the noninteractive musical accompaniments. Auto-accompaniment software allows the musician to play along with music displayed on screen. SmartMusic systems usually record performances so they can be played back for reflection and review, archived, or shared. One of the important aspects of machine listening is the decision about which aspects of the performance to monitor. Performances with interactive music systems occupy the space between a one-to-one direct physical relationship, typical of acoustic performance, and the playing along with preset accompaniment, Karaoke-style. Music produced by interactive music systems is as diverse as the musicians who create it. A transformative response utilizes the human input to form the response. Prepared sequenced responses can be of any length and complexity.
