ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the benefits and concerns to consider when using music technologies to support aural and theory skills development. Acquiring basic skills in music theory and aural awareness is a core aspect of music education. The term ear training is used here to mean developing an ability to perceive sonic features in music. An extensive assortment of software exists to support ear training and the study of music theory. The basis of music theory is the organization of musical elements-in particular, the ways that pitch and rhythm work independently and in combination to form melody, harmony, texture, and so on. Music theory software focuses on the structural organization of music and how music is represented as notation. Skills development in music theory and aural perception continues to be a core part of music education. The aim of aural and theory studies is to develop students' skills and understandings and help them develop from novice into expert musicians.
