ABSTRACT

Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is a major part of the environment in which the child is growing up. This chapter identifies several reasons that might be given for introducing the computer into early education. The reasons might be used to teach basic skills more efficiently, to prepare children for the future in schools and employment, to encourage collaboration and positive disposition towards ICT, to provide objects for the child to think with and/or to provide for special educational needs. A range of software products have been developed to support early learning in a wide range of subject areas. Many Early Years teachers prioritise the development of basic mouse and keyboard skills, and software such as Switch on Original. The first computer introduced into many schools was the Sinclair ZX81. The dangers of developing repetitive strain injuries (RSIs) and carpal tunnel syndrome have been well documented.
