ABSTRACT
There are many possible classifications of types of prose style. The difference between individual and common style is the difference between art and craftsmanship. The difference between individual and common style is the difference between art and craftsmanship. Almost any intelligent person, with a suitable environment, adequate physique and proper training, can learn a craft; but a very strong natural bent and, probably, a fanatical urge to pursue the art. It springs from a strong personality; certainly most artists of merit have strong personalities. It may also be at least suspected that originality of thought leads to originality of style. Two partial reasons for individuality of style are individuality of personality and uniqueness of subject matters psychological and a functional cause. It is impossible to write an individual style without being an individual, though having a lively personality does not enable a man to express it in paper.
