Is realism heading in the right direction?

As the preceding chapters illustrate, realism is a rich and diverse tradition encompassing several different research programs. Over the years, as the newer programs have emerged, realists have broadened the menu of candidate causes that might infl uence behavior and outcomes in international politics. Contemporary critics have argued that these additions have been unhelpful, either because they have been adopted simply to allow realists to “cover” known anomalies, or because they have been inconsistent with the core of the program to which they were added.
