Mental states pose problems for measurement and the determination of systematic causal relationships, in her view, because they are continuous, holistic, individual, subjective and determined by past experience. Scientifically, the accurate measurement of time intervals of less than one second was important because these were used to make inferences mental processes. Ideologically, measurement was the hallmark of hard science. Precision was pursued almost as a cult, aimed at establishing psychology on a par with physics, physiology. Margaret Rossiter, in study of American pioneer women scientists, has distinguished three strategies they used to achieve success. All recognise the existence of social stereotypes but react to them in different ways. professional activities – developing the status of psychology, both locally in London University and nationally, partly through her work with the British Psychological Society and as a teacher in a women’s college, training number of women who later played a prominent role in the development of scientific and professional psychology in Britain.
