ABSTRACT

As citizens of a nation-state, all people living within its boundaries are entitled to certain participatory rights. With these rights are associated capabilities and obligations, but women across the world have had to struggle to achieve their rightful position in society. Often it has been the traditional patriarchal system that has held women back, in others it has been the lack of support from their government. Quite often groups of people are deliberately disenfranchised or marginalized at the expense of more politically powerful elements of society. Women in Algeria are one such group of people who despite making enormous contributions to state building, have been forced to the margins of Algerian society.
