ABSTRACT

In a decade of dwindling budgets, public service providers need to promote their services actively in order to ensure that funds necessary to continue the service are received. As a service provider, marketing of services is a crucial component of legislative reference service, and librarian’s clientele has the power to influence an increase or decrease in their annual budget. Orientations to librarian’s reference service and its resources promote use of the service while assisting clients to use it effectively. If desired, the reference service can also take on the role of seminar sponsor by arranging for the facilities, speakers, and appropriate publicity. The function of a satellite desk is to facilitate requests for information, to explain services provided, and to provide a delivery point for information and materials requested. Newsletters alert librarian’s patrons to new services, trends, materials, or events, while incidentally keeping their service in their minds.
