ABSTRACT

The art or manuscript thief is not generally poor or uneducated. In fact, such persons are connoisseurs of art or manuscripts. Prior to his self-imposed retirement, Edward Moat was one of the most successful art thieves on three continents. Charles Hamilton suggests, moreover, that the security officer who caught Strich was dealt with unfairly by the New York Public Library. Hamilton then contacted the New York Public Library. “It took the library about an hour to find and check the pencilled slips on which was recorded the only evidence of their ownership of the historic documents. If someone arrived with an armload of the letters of Philip Schulyer, one would be wary, since the papers of Philip Schulyer reside at the New York Public Library under the care of the keeper of manuscripts.
