ABSTRACT

S. Bergman and M. Amir found that the strain of incarceration produces an accelerated deterioration in both the physical and mental health status of the elderly. The chronic grief and state of depression which may ensue can precipitate or contribute to other health problems in the elderly, especially when feelings of deep remorse are not resolved following incarceration. D. J. Bachand has described the concerns of correctional facility administrators related to the general health status of elderly inmates. The incarcerated elderly may also have experienced other major changes. Major changes in work roles, death of parents, spouse, siblings, and mandated relocation are other factors that can serve to increase the elderly’s feelings of loss. The exchanges of social support will be less than adequate for elderly inmates who are incarcerated in facilities which are geographically distant from friends or relatives.
