ABSTRACT
IT is sometimes difficult to draw a clear line between the “mental philosophy” of Spencer’s day and “mental science”—what is now subsumed by the term “psychology.” The reader should also see Chapter 6. The present chapter mostly includes discussions of Spencer’s psychology as it is presented in the four editions (1855-1899) of The Principles of Psychology (item 18).
