BOOKS are listed in their final editions, as overseen and revised by Spencer. Information on earlier editions follows the main entry. Multivolume sets of Spencer’s “collected” or “complete works” (released, especially, in 1896 and later) are not identified as such. Information on the publication as numbered fascicules of the first six volumes of the ten-volume A System of Synthetic Philosophy is found in the entries for First Principles, The Principles of Biology, The Principles of Psychology, and The Principles of Sociology. The many separately published “parts” of Spencer’s Principles of Sociology and The Principles of Ethics are listed individually and cross-referenced to the appropriate entries under “The Synthetic Philosophy.”
