ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the methodology used to evaluate the determinants of individual innovative behavior in a high technology product development organization. The role expectation that the manager/supervisor has for each Engineer, Designer, or Technician was measured using the following question developed by Scott and Bruce. The manager/supervisor of each subordinate was asked to rate each engineer on a five-point scale ranging from “role requires an innovator” to “role requires a supporter.” The innovative behavior questionnaire by Susanne G. Scott and Reginald A. Bruce starts out with the following information about innovative behavior. Innovation is a process involving both the generation and implementation of ideas. Managers/Supervisors were given a one page Innovative Behavior and Role Expectation survey to be filled out for each of their subordinates. The Leader-Member Exchange survey was scored such that a higher score represents a stronger relationship with supervisor.
