ABSTRACT

Some question exists among textual critics as to the original composition date of “The Shadow in the Rose Garden,” although it is generally thought to have been first written in 1907 or 1908. Lawrence Clark Powell (1937) described an early unpublished version entitled “The Vicar’s Garden,” a seven-page manuscript in Lawrence’s own hand, in ink on ruled 7 1/2 by 9 inch paper (21). Two six-page carbon typescripts made from and identical to the holograph, also titled “The Vicar’s Garden,” survive, too (Sagar 1979, 256).
