ABSTRACT

In courses pertaining to adolescent development at the college level, instructors can usually count on students having a relatively high level of interest in the subject matter, in part because they are in, or have emerged from, the developmental stage that is of focal concern. One technique that allows students to generate experiences with adolescents is for them to engage in community volunteer work in settings where they will have the opportunity to interact with adolescents. Among the different types of agencies that are generally interested in recruiting college student volunteers are: community social service agencies, educational institutions, medical, psychiatric, and other mental health facilities, juvenile justice agencies, and organized youth groups. Most hospital facilities have established programs for community service that can be utilized for volunteer placements in connection with courses in adolescent development. Instructors teaching courses in adolescent development will have varying experiences with the types of settings in which their students are volunteering.
