ABSTRACT

SUMMARY. The author discusses the development and use of computer data files for medieval Slavic manuscripts. The specific project discussed is based on a Bulgarian-American IREX project begun in 1994; since then several hundred manuscripts have been encoded, and the results reported at conferences. The paper discusses the ways that different information from manuscripts can be encoded, how that encoding can be represented for effective exchange of information, and what searching methods are used. The paper proposes new ideas for further development of the project using SGML, discusses a template for Slavic manuscripts, and discusses issues of searching a full-text database. The paper also focuses on standardization problems, copyright questions, teamwork organization, and methodological difficulties in the development of electronic resources and their use.
