ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses how the major union representing Canadian workers in the industry, the Canadian Automobile Workers (CAW), developed its policy on work reorganization and to present the results of a worker survey sponsored by the union. The decision by the CAW in 1994 to sponsor one of the largest studies ever done on worker attitudes to work reorganization was not a random event. The CAW interest in worker surveys and benchmarking the quality of working life represents a third wave of CAW research into the changing nature of work in the automobile industry. The chapter traces the evolution of CAW policy towards work reorganization, presents the results of a new research project into the impact of work reorganization on the quality of working life, and discusses the attempts by the CAW to defend its members' interests.
