ABSTRACT

Mounting a subset of the MEDLINE file on a local computer is an idea attractive to many health sciences libraries. Recent advances in computer hardware and software along with the National Library of Medicine's issuance of a “Domestic MEDLARS Subset Policy” have also made it feasible. Before a MEDLINE subset is mounted, however, numerous technical, policy and training issues have to be considered. The Health Sciences Library has recently pondered the possibilities of mounting a MEDLINE subset on its own computer. This article is a discussion of both general and specific issues and questions which arose in the library's deliberations. It is offered as a framework for discussion to other libraries who may be involved in a similar venture.
