ABSTRACT
This significant increase in the number and vitality of consortia in the late 20th century can be attributed to a number of factors. Notably, economic, social, and technological changes have all had their impact on the need to cooperate and work together. In the opinions of many, cooperative collection development is the best hope for rationalizing effective access and ownership strategies given the economic and technological pressures we face today.
