ABSTRACT

This chapter considers quantitative indicators of innovation activities in service firms. It focuses on data from Research and Development (R&D) surveys and innovation surveys, data on organizational change and on employment of highly educated personnel and finally some casual data on the costs of purchase and development of software for in-house use. Two kinds of indicators of services investments in knowledge development are available: data from R&D surveys and data from innovation surveys. Data on investments in organizational change can be used to analyse methods for and efficiency in the use of available human resources. Organizational change has the special feature of being a possible innovation in itself and at the same time a factor enabling other innovation activities. Human resources data on employment of qualified scientists and engineers is another measure of inputs that facilitate innovation activities and could therefore be used as an indicator of organized innovation activities.
