ABSTRACT

This collection of articles addressing sexual abuse by Roman Catholic priests begins to bring together disparate but committed voices with a common concern to address sexual abuse in the church. There are concrete suggestions that deserve attention: Michael J. Bland suggests making the Bishops Ad Hoc Committee a standing committee. Bishop Hubbard brought the refreshing breath of air when he acknowledged the responsibility of the institution for creation of the mess. Archbishop Flynn raised the important point that yes, media accounts often fail to provide context about where and when the problem occurred, how it was handled and what has been done or is being done to address it. Fr. Cozzens did not hesitate to support the work of the Commission. Alomar, Pope, and Miller expand the discussion even further and emphasize the double impact of clergy abuse within communities of color and the gay and lesbian community.
