ABSTRACT

The voluntary National Interlibrary Loan Code, revised in January 2001, governs Interlibrary Loan (ILL) and provides a very broad policy for departmental operations. It is intended to foster open and liberal Interlibrary Loan policies. Departmental supervisors should be very familiar with the Code. Copies should be available to all staff members, and time should be taken to discuss it thoroughly. Many statewide networks or consortia have written ILL policies that the department should be aware of, all of which closely mirror the national code, with minor variations. One of the minor variations in the TexShare ILL protocol is the proviso that member libraries will not charge each other processing fees for lost or damaged materials. Supervisors should be aware of the library’s membership in any special library groups, especially those that include a resource sharing or ILL component, and should know what their department’s rights and responsibilities are with respect to these codes.
