ABSTRACT

Interlibrary Borrowing departments handle large amounts of material, so efficient workflows and streamlined procedures are essential. This chapter provides some basic examples, guidelines and suggestions for Borrowing operations. The first step in the Interlibrary Loan (ILL) process is the generation or creation of an ILL request. Requests generally are submitted by the following methods: paper forms; electronic forms; links from databases or other electronic resources; and paper forms. ILL departments are encouraged to use electronic requesting systems whenever possible. There are numerous IMS software products available that include a request module as part of the package. Bibliographic utilities offer powerful systems for locating materials and resources and for requesting those materials from other libraries. Verification is a challenging and potentially frustrating activity for ILL staff. ILL staffshould be encouraged to utilize a wide range of tools and strategies for verification and to share their expertise with other staff members.
