Searching for elusive quotations is always complicated by the realization that in many cases, in the words of an excellent book, They Never Said It (Boller and George, 1989). Another highly readable reference book on the subject of spurious quotes is Nice Guys Finish Seventh (Keyes, 1992). Finally, for the serious searcher of lost quotations, there is the definitive The Quote Sleuth; A Manual for the Tracer of Lost Quotations (Shipps, 1990).
