In the early 1990s, when the Internet was in its beginning stages, Robert Heterick, then the Vice President for Information at Virginia Tech (he would later be the President of Educom), stated that the Internet would be all ab out disintermediation. He explained that when telephone operators were eliminated from the phone system, the use of phones increased dramatically. At the time, he postulated that the Internet would disintermediate many current services.
