ABSTRACT

This book is meant as a textbook and trade book, not only a scholarly monograph. What I seek to "trade" are observations and ideas coming from a life of teaching and writing about popular culture. I address the general reader as well as the specialist. Footnotes would be necessary; but I have preferred endnotes, suggesting what sources I have found most helpful and which can lead the interested reader into deeper waters. There is an extensive list for Further Reading.
