Introduction

Not too many years ago a reference librarian mastered a few reference books, picked-up the skills of the reference interview and how not to insult someone on the telephone when a long line of eager readers was in front of the desk. Aside from a cursory knowledge of interlibrary loan and matters related to book selection, budgets and vacations there was not too much more to know.
