ABSTRACT

The practice of recording previous hit songs is common in American musical history. During the 1930s and 1940s, for instance, popular singers invariably incorporated several "standards" into their radio performances, their dance band shows, and their 78 rpm releases. Although very little research has been published on the standards of the first decade of the rock era (1954-1964),1 it can easily be demonstrated that numerous contemporary artists have built significant portions of their repertoires on so-called golden oldie hits.
