ABSTRACT

The Massacre of the Innocents is perhaps one of the most tragic accounts in history of one man’s desire for control over other human beings. Herod was concerned that he was about to lose military and political power because of the birth of the infant boy Jesus in Bethlehem. Most of us are a little more subtle in the controlling behaviors, perhaps even unaware of them, but we are all controlling at one time or another. When we are controlling, we are not in friendship, for friendship is a relationship of equality. Friendship can only exist when each person is seeing and being seen clearly. Any friendship from elementary school through high school was suddenly severed. We try to take a weekend retreat together every year and expand the friendships as we so desire in and outside of the group.
