ABSTRACT

Geographic distance can be a very effective strategy. Although lonely at times, it leaves one feeling safe enough to continue experiencing love as exciting and desirable. The author had a long-distance lover once when she was in the seventh grade. He lived in New York. She lived in Baltimore. He was a dream handsome, funny, sexy and head over heels in love with her. But the author was too young, too afraid, and too vulnerable to really be in love. That distancing strategy was incredibly effective. She devised a number of distancing strategies. Overzealous participation in politics. For Sally, that might mean a long-distance relationship. The author says to Sally, enjoy and appreciate the love that you do have in current long-distance relationship and take heart from some tender words of Stephen Levine from his book, Healing into Life and Death "even a millisecond of love is a miracle".
