ABSTRACT

Rio de Janeiro is the second largest city in Brazil, with approximately eight million residents. The city is divided into four zones: north, south, downtown and the suburbs. Tourism is one of the most important sources of income and is restricted to the south zone, where the famous beaches such as Copacabana and Ipanema are located. In a society where the macho figure is seen as the cornerstone of masculinity, anyone who is not macho is rejected. So the hustler feels he has to be seen as macho, paid to fulfill the wishes of the "almost-female". Hustlers adopt false names which act like registered labels to help sell the product. Contact points have been established in the center of town, at the central train station and the cinema district, as well as in Copacabana at Maxim's bar and Galeria Alaska.
