ABSTRACT

The Rise of Gawain is written in Medieval Latin. The single remaining manuscript is a copy made in the early fourteenth century. Its date has been debated, but it was written after Geoffrey of Monmouth (mid-twelfth century) because the plot and many specific passages are borrowed from Geoffrey. Although J . D . Bruce and R. S. Loomis propose a date of composition in the thirteenth century, several details of costume and ship construction suggest an earlier date.
