ABSTRACT
The proportions participating at least occasionally and, separately, regularly in each type of gambling surveyed are shown again in Table 11.1, as a summary of Chapters 6–10. How are these figures related to each other? Do the same people participate in each type of gambling or is each a very distinctive activity? Clearly there are differences between each type of gambling in the extent to which it combines with other forms. In Tables 11.2, we summarize the findings on how far gambling is a composite activity. Doing the pools is obviously an activity that does not link closely with other gambling – almost 50 per cent of both men and women who do the pools engage in no other form of gambling at all regularly. It is associated most nearly with general betting or use of betting shops, especially for men, where almost a quarter do both. About a sixth of women who do the pools also play bingo.
