ABSTRACT

This paper will bring to light some of the findings from the cIDADES survey performed in Portugal between 2010 and 2011. The name of the research project, cIDADES, represents the coming together of two Portuguese words: the word for “cities,” Cidades, and the word for “age groups,” Idades. The aim of the survey was to assess the awareness of senior citizens of how many of the age-friendly features identified on the Checklist of Essential Features of Age-Friendly Cities developed by the World Health Organization (WHO) were actually available in their cities. The findings of the survey are discussed from a methodological standpoint and from a more substantive perspective.
