ABSTRACT

This chapter presents several existing solar thermal cooling installations as case studies. The project is collaboration between Steinway & Son, ERS, Sustainable Energy Consulting, Abengoa Solar Inc., Sunshine plus Solar, BROAD USA and Schuyler Engineering. This system provides steam for the laundry and air conditioning for a hotel on the Mediterranean coast in Dalaman, Turkey. It was collaboration between the TUI Iberotel, DLR and Solitem. It has 40 parabolic trough collectors for process heat and cooling, and has been operational since 2003. A solar thermal cooling system from Broad was installed at the hospital to support the existing HVAC system. The storage extends the operational hours of the system into times when there is limited solar radiation, such as at night or when it is cloudy. One of the lessons learned during this project is that it should be clear who is responsible for overall system design, selection and sizing of the individual system components.
