ABSTRACT

Darfur region occupies a total area of 493,180.00 sq km in the western part of Sudan. It shares international borders with Chad, the Central African Republic, and Libya (Figure 5.1). It is bound on the north, east, and south by the Northern State, Kordofan Region, and Bahr El Ghazal, respectively. Darfur extends from latitude 10° N to 20° N and from longitude 22° E to 27.5° E. The Darfur region is subdivided into three states, North Darfur, South Darfur, and West Darfur, with El Fasher, Nyala, and Geneina as the respective capitals hosting the government administration. The states are further subdivided into localities, and the localities into administrative units. The location of Darfur, with its neighboring drought-affected and unstable areas, has environmental and social implications. In particular, the rich savanna zones in western Darfur are the first refuge for the nomads, as well as for people from across the border who are affected by war and drought.
