The critiques of neo-liberal globalization multiplied on a number of fronts. Seattle was a crucial success for global justice movement (GJM) because it demonstrated the possibility of mass mobilizations to alter the best-laid plans of corporations and governments. Intellectual critiques are only potent when they have the power of a block of citizens legit imizing their arguments with their life-histories and willingness to put their bodies as a stop sign to more of the same. Smith's work is focused on the transnational nature of social movements and their effects on international organizations. The Forum remains a vibrant point of solidarity and hope within the movements but it has become the focus of contention and criticism. The critics The GJM is the subject of a great deal of controversy at many levels. The economic model of the North has also reinforced the economic critiques of the GJM.
