In considering René Major and Patrick Miller's remarks, one must remember that they write against a background of Lacanian discourse that pervades all aspects of contemporary Parisian psychoanalytic thought—either by sympathy or antipathy, one might say. Summarizing in a language more familiar to English-speaking analysts may be of help.
