Editor's Note on the Documents

One of the major reasons for publishing this edition of documents relating to the Irish-German background of the Easter Rising is the unavailability of most German documents to international research. Most non-German historians simply are not able fruitfully to work in German archives. In the process of preparing this book, however, it became clear that it would hardly serve scholarly purposes to publish only the unknown or lesser known German documents and in the course to ignore the greater historical context in which they were created. Therefore, the selection offered not only includes letters of Sir Roger Casement written in most cases to diplomats and functionaries of the German Foreign Office, but also letters written to Irish or American contemporaries who mayor may not have shared his views. Also reproduced are numerous letters and memoranda from German officials connected with the German attempts to foment unrest in Ireland.
