ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the development of online modes for teaching and learning in higher education. It looks at the way in which they are playing out around the world and their infiltration into higher education practices. It considers the opportunities that are on offer for cosmopolitan educators and the challenges that these opportunities present. It looks at a number of initiatives that are taking place around the world and evaluates their success and potential in terms of assisting students to gain cosmopolitan outcomes. And it concludes with some 'good practice' principles for leveraging online modalities to optimise cosmopolitan learning. There is an array of approaches to online education that lend themselves to cosmopolitan learning. The basic advantage of online education is that it enables students to learn with peers from other parts of the world.
